Buddy the Cat Cared for the Squirrel

Buddy our Feral CatBuddy adopted us a few years ago when his people left without him.  So I gave him my front porch and let him know his job was to guard the front porch – which he does very well.  He even takes walks with the dog when we go in the park across the street.  And for Buddy’s help, I supply him with delicious cat food.  He’s a super smart cat and obeys commands such as ‘stay’ and ‘cross.’  Above is a recent picture of Buddy outwitting the predator birds in the neighborhood.  He lays out on the grass in a pose that makes you wonder if he’s alive or not.

Over the last few years, my garden has flourished.  It’s gone from the front yard through the side yard and into the backyard.  Along with flourishing, it’s attracted wild life.

I have birds! Bluebirds, Cardinals, Titmouse, two different kinds of Wood Peckers, assorted small birds and, the biggest bird so far: Blue Jays!  It’s so amazing to see the constant stream of feathered friends visit each day.  I also have a lot of squirrels that now call my garden home!   It’s lovely to see my visitors outside my office window.

I’m guessing that the word got out?!

Now when I take my dog for a walk in the park across the street, there’s a young squirrel that will do everything possible to attract my attention.  This squirrel is soooo cute!  It’s almost as if he says “Is it you? Is it really you?”  and will come right to me!  (of course he gets a in-the-shell peanut!)

So, now this little friend has caught on to where I live.  He crosses the street in order to come right up to me while I’m watering plants in my front yard.

I was quite concerned about this little cutie’s antics because Buddy hangs out in the front yard!

Buddy caring for a squirrel! The little daring squirrel didn’t think much about crossing the road today and then making his way across the grass to the small tree in the yard.  I was standing there watching while Buddy, who was only two feet away, calmly watched the squirrel get safely into the tree.

Oh my gosh!  I could hardly believe my eyes!  Buddy duplicated the scene and didn’t harm the dare-devil squirrel.

Buddy got old, got slower but still visited us.  I had a feeling that his last visit was going to be the last because of how slow he got and tired he looked.  It was.

For some reason, I still have feral cats that come to visit and stay around for months or years.  Each one is a great friend and special in his or her own way.
