My Digital Art – How I Create Dreamscapes
You are going to need two definitions in order to understand how I create Dreamscapes: Geometric and Fractals.
Geometric is a modifier and has three definitions:
1. Of or relating to geometry and its methods and principles.
2. Increasing or decreasing in a geometric progression.
3. Using simple geometric forms such as circles and squares in design and decoration.
The definition is from The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language, 5th Edition
Fractals are “An object whose parts, at infinitely many levels of magnification, appear geometrically similar to the whole.” [The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language, 5th Edition]
For instance, the structure of a leaf, fern, grass, one feather of a bird and so on. One arbitrary small part of a leaf has the same pattern as each and every other leaf.
This can be magnified in or out and it will be the same for each individual part and for the whole altogether. Fractals in the virtual computer world are created mathematically which is what is done behind the scenes when creating a fractal on a computer with a fractal program. Once a fractal is created, it needs to be rendered to disk – which means it needs to be turned into a graphic that can be edited in a graphic program such as Adobe.
My dreamscapes are created with many fractals. First I create a fractal, then I render it to disk and then I use that part in the bigger dreamscapes composition.
Once in its graphic form, I can change the colors, size, use “paint brushes” to change the shape or take out parts of the shape, use a section or use different sections in different areas of the dreamscape. The create of a dreamscape is nearly unlimited. Imagination and the inspiration around me rule!
Each fractal piece of a dreamscape I create takes an hour to four hours depending on the work I put into making it perfect for the particular dreamscape I’m working on. The creation of an entire dreamscape takes anywhere from fifty (50) to one hundred (100) hours.
I also use Adobe Photoshop for a huge assortment of effects and colors.
Putting a Dreamscape together is amazing because I don’t plan out the piece. I create it with the inspiration that’s around me. The inspiration always includes music, my best friend (Berkeley the Singing Dog), nature, birds, squirrels plus the good things that are happening in life. It might also include other inspiration, too.
It’s my own little wonderland.
I have a huge variety of shapes, forms and designs that I fit into the Dreamscape. Sometimes I have to add or take away from the part I’m using. Then adjust the colors and the Mood Lines in order to create the effects and the message that I want in the Dreamscape.
Each dreamscape itself is the work of 50 to 100 hours to accomplish. This is why I emphasize FINE digital art. There is no program where a person can push one button and presto! Instant art!
Many, many moons ago I started with this style of art. My first pieces were amateur but have evolved to become quite sophisticated over the eight years that I’ve been creating dreamscapes.
This last year my digital works have taken quite a leap. The feedback I’ve received over the last year has been very encouraging. Thank you very much for following along with my creations and for reading about how I create Dreamscapes.
